Nathan “Nate” Alderman has dedicated over two decades to public service, bringing both passion and integrity to his role in human resources and civil service.
Nate grew up in Bath, NY, spending much of his childhood on his grandparent’s farm. His love for the outdoors continues today, especially when spending time with his son. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Alfred University, Nate began his career with Steuben County in 2001 as a Personnel Technician Trainee. His dedication and hard work led him through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as Personnel Officer in 2016.
Nate’s involvement with the New York State Association of Personnel and Civil Service Officers (NYSAPCSO) dates back to the very beginning of his career. He has been an active member since 2001, serving as Hospitality Chair for many years and holding the position of President from 2019 to 2022. In addition to his professional affiliations, Nate is a member of various hunting and fishing organizations, reflecting his love for the outdoors.
Throughout his career, Nate has learned that one of the most important aspects of civil service is the responsibility to make sound, ethical decisions based on the law. “In this line of work, we are dealing with individuals’ livelihoods, so we have a responsibility to make sound, ethical decisions based on law,” he says. His advice to those new to civil service is to connect with colleagues in other agencies, as they are often the best resource for navigating challenges.
Looking to the future of civil service, Nate hopes to see improvements in streamlining processes from application to hire, helping to fill positions permanently in a more timely manner.
Outside of work, Nate is an avid hunter, fisherman, and classic car enthusiast. He enjoys boating and being on the water, and is a devoted Jimmy Buffett fan, having attended many of his concerts over the years.
Nate’s dedication, experience, and leadership continue to make a lasting impact on both Steuben County and the NYSAPCSO community!
