#NYSAPCSOProud: Navigating Careers in Civil Service with Albany

Monday, July 7, 2025 | Albany Public Library

The path to a rewarding career in civil service just got clearer for Capital Region job seekers. On Monday, July 7th, the Albany Public Library played host to an impactful Job Readiness Workshop in partnership with the City of Albany, Albany County, and the New York State Department of Civil Service. This free, hands-on event was designed to provide participants with the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to navigate the civil service system and pursue meaningful careers in public service.

From the moment the doors opened, attendees were met with a welcoming environment and a lineup of resources tailored to meet job seekers where they are. Participants received hands-on assistance with applying for jobs and civil service exams, a process that often feels overwhelming or confusing for first-time applicants. Tatiana Diaz (City of Albany), Timothy Lansing (Albany County), and Adam Rossi (State Civil Service) were there to guide individuals through each step, offering practical tips and demystifying the technical aspects of the hiring process.

The workshop also featured an overview of how the City, County, and State hires, offering attendees a behind-the-scenes look at civil service procedures and what agencies are really looking for in candidates. Whether someone was just beginning their job search or had already taken exams and was waiting for the next steps, this session provided clarity and direction.

Additional workshop highlights included:

Resume Reviews: Participants had their resumes reviewed by workforce professionals, receiving personalized feedback and tips for improvement.

Workforce Development Referrals: Job seekers were connected with programs and training opportunities to build new skills or strengthen existing ones.

Inspiring Stories: Each month new speakers from local government and civil service shared their career journeys, offering encouragement and highlighting the many ways public service can be a fulfilling and impactful path.

“We’re breaking down silos and removing barriers to create transparency and access to opportunities.” noted Tatiana Diaz, City of Albany HR Director. “By teaching people how to navigate the civil service system and connecting them with essential workforce development resources, we’re helping job-seekers across the Capital Region find meaningful careers in public service and government.”

Whether you’re a recent graduate, someone looking to make a career change, or just curious about how to get your foot in the door, this workshop served as a vital starting point.
