In true public service spirit, Workforce Development and Civil Service professionals across the Greater Capital Region continue to demonstrate the impact of collaboration, innovation, and accessibility by offering free virtual career workshops to job seekers throughout the month of July.
What began as a temporary response to pandemic limitations has now grown into a regional workforce development initiative that’s breaking down barriers and bringing expert guidance directly to those who need it most. The program is supported by the Workforce Development Board and includes participation from eleven counties—Albany, Columbia, Greene, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren, and Washington—with each contributing to the development and delivery of specialized workshop content at different times of the year.
Among the sessions offered this month are:
• Resume Development
• Interview Preparation
• Networking
• Transferable Skills
• Goal Setting
• Social Media for Job Seekers
• Overcoming Barriers
• Broadview Financial Well-Being
• Completing Job Applications
• Civil Service Process
Of particular note is the Civil Service informational session, facilitated by Schenectady County this month while in partnership with the New York State Department of Labor. This session helps demystify the hiring process, exam structures, and the “Rule of Three,” while showcasing the many benefits of a career in government. Though hosted by Schenectady, the information is applicable to all counties and job seekers under this Workforce Development region.
Similarly, the job application workshops, also facilitated by Schenectady this month, are designed to provide universally relevant advice—whether an individual is applying for a municipal role or a private sector opportunity. The content is centered around building strong applications, understanding applicant tracking systems, and ensuring candidates submit accurate, effective information.
These workshops underscore what we in public service already know: that access to good information and caring professionals can change the course of someone’s life. Through these sessions, civil service professionals are not only providing technical support—they’re offering hope, opportunity, and a path forward.
