With over two decades of experience in local government, Irene Sorriento has become a dedicated and influential force in her community. Born and raised in Rensselaer County, Irene’s deep connection to her hometown is evident in everything she does—from her work in civil service to her active role in local government.
For nearly three years, Irene has served as the part-time Director of Civil Service for Rensselaer County. In this role, she oversees a wide range of civil service operations for the County, its municipalities, and school districts. From exam administration and position classification to providing technical guidance on civil service law, Irene has played a key role in ensuring fair and efficient hiring practices. Her passion for public service shines through in her efforts to modernize processes, enhance communication, and guide appointing authorities with integrity and care.
In addition to her work with the County, Irene serves as the Troy City Council Member representing District 5. She works collaboratively with residents, city departments, and fellow council members to develop policies and solutions that directly impact the neighborhoods she loves.
Among Irene’s proudest accomplishments is the progress she’s made in stabilizing and organizing the Civil Service Department. She’s led efforts to improve compliance, streamline internal systems, and build trust with stakeholders. Irene is also a committed mentor to new professionals, believing strongly in lifting others as she climbs.
Her most valuable takeaways from a career in civil service? Adaptability, empathy, and the ability to communicate clearly—especially when working within the complex, people-centered world of government. “Civil service requires balancing legal compliance with human understanding,” she reflects.
When asked what advice she would give to someone new to civil service, Irene is quick to emphasize patience, curiosity, and integrity. “Never underestimate the impact of your role in the bigger picture of public service.”
If given the chance to implement one major change to the civil service system, Irene would focus on improving accessibility and transparency. “Many people are unaware of the opportunities that exist within civil service. Demystifying the process—especially for young professionals and underserved communities—would strengthen the public workforce for years to come.”
Outside of her professional life, Irene enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, participating in community events, and recharging through her love of music.
Whether leading local policy change or mentoring the next generation of civil servants, Irene’s commitment to service, innovation, and community stands as an inspiring model for all those working in public service!
