On July 17, 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the application period is now open for the New York State’s entry-level law enforcement civil service examinations.

One of those civil service examinations being offered will be for Municipal Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff #21-066010. This examination will generate an eligible list that can be used at the disposure of all local civil service agencies whose law enforcement eligible list(s) becomes exhausted/non-mandatory as a back-up list to help fill a vacancy need.

This eligible list will be maintain by the New York State Department of Civil Service. Once an agency’s law enforcement eligible list becomes exhausted/non-mandatory, an agency can reach out to the Municipal Services Division (MSD) with the zip code(s) that they wish to obtain candidates within. MSD will then provide of listing and contact information of those who reside within that geographical area that are on their list.

While this eligible list is not mandatory to use, agencies are encourage to utilize this benefit instead of making another potential at-risk provisional appointment. Candidates interested in law enforcement should be encouraged to apply for this examination, along with the local agencies of interest, to increase their chances with landing a job in law enforcement. There is no cost to the candidate through August 14, 2024.

It is important to note that candidates on an agency’s eligible list must be considered first before this back eligible list can be used. To help market the local civil service exams, the New York State Department of Civil Service website contains links to all local agency websites that are offering a local law enforcement examination on September 28, 2024. Furthermore, this statewide examination is being held to support local civil service agencies and to drive applicants for these hard to recruit positions.
