With over 26 years in local government, Anita Cleveland has built a career defined by dedication, growth, and service. Starting as an entry-level Clerk Typist at Genesee Community College, Anita steadily progressed through the ranks, earning her Associate’s degree in Business Administration and later a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, and Economics with a concentration in Human Resources. Since 2006, she has been an integral part of Genesee County Human Resources, where she has served as Human Resources Director for the past 12 years.
Beyond her professional role, Anita is deeply involved in her community. She serves as a board member at Tonawanda Valley Federal Credit Union, is an active member of the GAPA HR Association, and contributes to the Advisory Committee for Genesee Community College. Her commitment to professional and community engagement reflects her passion for leadership and service.
Anita takes great pride in the breadth of experience she has gained throughout her career, having held every position within her department—from HR Clerk to her current role as Director. Personally, she has also achieved remarkable milestones, including completing a half marathon and winning first place in her age group at the local CrossFit Festivus Games.
Transitioning from an entry-level role to administration helped Anita overcome her natural shyness, and she now thrives on working with employees and organizations to navigate civil service processes and solve complex problems. For those new to civil service, she offers valuable advice: “Be patient—there’s a lot to learn. Be open to change because just when you think you’ve got it, things shift. And don’t hesitate to reach out to our group with questions—they’re a great resource.”
Looking ahead, Anita is passionate about modernizing the civil service system. She advocates for an updated exam process to address the decline in candidates, including expanding Training & Experience exams and eliminating testing for licensed occupations.
Outside of work, Anita enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, working out regularly, and practicing CrossFit five days a week. She and her husband have also recently taken up ballroom dancing, adding a fun new challenge to their routine.
Anita Cleveland’s journey is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and a commitment to both professional excellence and personal fulfillment!
